Just days before Pope Francis’ long-awaited encyclical on the environment was scheduled to be published, a leaked version has made headlines around the world—and it’s looking like good news for animals.

Denouncing the way humans are trampling God’s creation, the pope is reported to say, “We have grown up thinking that we were [the Earth’s] owners and dominators, authorised to loot her. The violence that exists in the human heart, wounded by sin, is also manifest in the symptoms of illness that we see in the Earth, the water, the air and in living things.”

Early reports say that the pope follows with a sharp call to action for the whole world to change its lifestyle and consumption habits in order to combat climate change.

And what’s the best way to do that? Go vegan, of course!

As Pope Francis has beautifully articulated, Christians aren’t the owners of God’s creation, including animals. Instead, we’ve been called to steward with mercy and compassion—protecting the interests of God’s animals as Jesus would. But farms and slaughterhouses today treat animals like nothing more than profit-making machines without any regard to the needs given to them by their Creator.

In the U.S., we kill 27 billion animals each year just to satisfy our craving for flesh. Not only is going vegan better for animals, it’s also better for the planet, since a staggering 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture, according to the Worldwatch Institute.

Pope Francis has the opportunity to make a monumental impact for farmed animals by going vegan—but we need your help to encourage him to make the switch! Click the button below to urge the pope to stand up for creation by going vegan:
